THE AACHEN TREATY
A Celebration of Friendship and Cooperation Between France and Germany

A conversation with Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christofer Burger;
and Consul General of France, Raphaël Trapp

Tuesday, January 23, 2024 | 9:30-10:45 AM
FIU-MMC | Graham Center - GC 150

The Elysée Treaty was signed on January 22, 1963 by French President Charles De Gaulle and German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer to consolidate its friendship and cooperation. Chancellor  Angela Merkel and President Emmanuel Macron, along with lawmakers from both countries, called for a "new Élysée Treaty" in January 2018 on the occasion of its 55th anniversary, the so called Aachen Treaty was signed on 22 January 2019.

Sixty-one years later, the world has changed, as have the challenges for European countries, but the solution remains the same: it is the continuation of the European project. The Franco-German partnership has a decisive role to play. More than ever, Europe needs a strong and united partnership between the Germans and the French. To celebrate this Anniversary, join Consul General of France, Raphaël Trapp and Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, Christofer Burger for a discussion on the importance of the Franco-German relations, the European dimension, and transatlantic aspects.
