The conversation discussed the recently agreed EU funding for the European Defence Fund (EDF) and military mobility, third country participation to the EDF and the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO), Germany's defense spending and investments, current discussions on US troop presence in Germany and in Europe, the EU's new naval mission enforcing the UN arms embargo in Libya (Irini), the use of armed forces and military assets in Germany's response to COVID-19, the legacy of Chancellor Angela Merkel a few months ahead of the end of her 16-year terms in office, and Ursula von der Leyen's influence in shaping a more ambitious EU in the field of defense.
