Lecture on 'Social Movements, civil society and social justice in Europe: from crisis to renewal?' by Dr. Peter Funke, Associate Professor of Politics, School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies, University of South Florida; and Dr. Markus Thiel, Director, Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, and European & Eurasian Studies, FIU.

This panel will explore the role of social movements in the pursuit of social justice in the EU. It will emphasize how social movements have aimed to press for more social rights, inclusion and popular legitimacy in the EU, but also highlight the need for political institutionalization so as to stabilize participatory and contentious ‘bottom up’ input in European and EU policy-making. Given the lingering effects of the Eurocrisis and the emergence of populist-nationalist powers in EU states, we'll ask to what extent social movements differ from the past, and to what extent civil society can contribute.'

Peter N. Funke is Associate Professor of Politics at the School of Interdisciplinary Global Studies at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He received his PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and his “Vordiplom” from the Freie Universität Berlin. His research focuses on social movements & contentions politics, capitalism & class, media & technology. Peter is the co-editor of The Great Refusal: Herbert Marcuse and Contemporary Social Movements (Temple University Press 2017), The New Global Politics: Global Social Movements in the 21st Century (Routledge 2017) and has published in various journals, including Globalization, New Media & Society, Rethinking Marxism, Social Movement Studies, or Studies in Social Justice. Markus Thiel is Associate Professor of Politics & International Relations, and Director of the Miami-Florida Jean Monnet Center of Excellence, and European & Eurasian Studies at the Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Florida International University. His research focuses on the political sociology of the EU and European (Union) Politics more generally, and Nationalism & Identity (Politics). He has published several journal articles and book chapters. He is also author of The Limits of Transnationalism: Collective Identities and EU Integration (Palgrave, 2011) and also co-edited four volumes: one with Lisa Prügl on Diversity and the European Union (Palgrave, 2009), one with Roger Coate on Identity politics in the Age of Globalization (Lynne Rienner/First Forum Press, 2010), one with Rebecca Friedman on European Identity and Culture: Narratives of Transnational Belonging (Ashgate, 2012), and the latest one on Sexual Politics in IR: how LGBTQ claims shape IR (Routledge, 2015).
