This year marks the 25th anniversary of the launch of the euro in 1999 as a unit of account. While the euro has become the world's second most important currency behind the dollar, the EU has remained reliant of third party technology and companies for payment solutions. In October 2021, the ECB launched an investigation into a digital euro, and in 2023 began preparations for launching a digital currency. In addition to an economic tool to provide a digital payment option across the euro area, a digital euro also serves as a geoeconomic tool to gain autonomy and monetary sovereignty. This webinar will address the role of the digital euro as a mechanism for the EU to secure its financial infrastructure and the future of the digital currency.
