March 10-11, 2025: Two-day MFJMCE Conference "Democratic Values & Civic Participation in Europe & Beyond"
2024 was a ‘super election’ year. In many European elections, including to the European Parliament and the elections in the USA, not only did governments change, but also a debate ensued about democratic values and civic participation. This conference explores inclusion and diversity issues with a focus on democratic governance and resilience, and political participation by individuals and civic groups. What are the challenges to established democracies in this respect, and how can these be mitigated (together)? What can be done to combat apathy, as well as polarization caused by misinformation and slow consensus-finding in increasingly diverse societies? In both, the US and the EU, these questions have come to the fore, but also necessitate reflecting on the broader geopolitical contexts in which democratic backsliding and polarization occurs.
