PIR Lecture: US–Türkiye Relations Since the Cold War

The diplomatic ties established in 1927 between Türkiye and the US have been on a roller-coaster since the end of the Cold War. Despite their NATO alliance in the 1950s, relations deteriorated during the 1970s and 1980s due to the Cyprus issue. In the 1990s, the countries collaborated in the First Gulf War and the Balkan Wars, marking a “strategic partnership.” Relations declined again with the Second Gulf War in 2003, but by the end of the 2000s, they strengthened as a “Model Partnership.” This relationship faltered in the 2010s due to regional conflicts, the Arab uprisings, the Kurdish issue, and the Syrian Civil War. During the Trump administration, pragmatic, interest-based cooperation and focus on regional balances brought the countries closer once again. Join us as we explore the evolving dynamics of US–Türkiye relations.
