ImageLife of the Mind Lecture Series: "Photographing War in the 20th Century"
by Jay Winter, PhD, Charles J. Stille Professor of History Emeritus, Yale University

The Kodak revolution transformed what we know about war. In 1914, the Kodak company furnished for free or for $1 a shot pocket cameras which soldiers and sailors all over the world used for their own purposes. By doing so, they undermined the monopoly on images of war held by the state and a tightly-managed illustrated press. The ugly side of war could no longer be hidden through censorship. This lecture is about this moment in the history of war photography and about its consequences, continuing through to the Abu Ghraib images that helped bring the horrors of the Iraq war to everybody’s attention.

Lecture co-sponsored by:Department of History, Department of History Graduate Student Association, European and Eurasian Studies Program, Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs and Ruth K. and Shepard Broad Distinguished Lecture Series, The Center for the Humanities in an Urban Environment, The Office of the Provost
