Our spring 2013 conference will be on 'Comparative Regional Perspectives on Innovation in the Single Market'. ‘Innovation’ is one of the buzzwords of the 21st century. In an age where information travels speedily across the globe and technology increases competitive pressures worldwide, research and development (R&D) and other flanking policy measures are of critical importance. This becomes ever more pronounced as the global economic crisis has shown that strong regional markets are necessary to counteract the domino-effect in interdependent economies. The EU has recognized the potential that innovation can bring to the economies of its Single Market, and developed a variety of programs in various Directorate Generals, a ‘Europe 2020’ blueprint as well as a European Institute for Innovation & Technology. Other regional blocs are following suit and emphasize innovative regulatory methods, political coordination and investment in R&D in an effort to become more competitive. How has the concept of innovation traveled to regional markets across the globe? How applicable and (dis)similar are innovation strategies, given the differing strengths and structures of these regions? This conference will focus on the issue of innovation in the Single Market in a global comparative perspective and critically analyze the concept from a variety of disciplinary perspectives (including business/economy, politics & international relations and sociology) and regional blocs. This conference will be held in collaboration with Gediz University, Izmir, Turkey.
